Promoting Reading in the classroom
In 1999 NRP received funding from the UNESCO Programme "Campaign for Africa – Reading for All". This funding was used to run workshops for 65 ABET practitioners. Areas covered included the importance of reading in ABET classes, the importance of learning to read in the mother-tongue first, different ways of using readers in the classroom etc. Participants were also given a book pack as a contribution to their classroom type of subject matter, adapted for the various audiences. These workshops have taken place in the Western Cape, Limpopo Province, the North West Province and on the KZN South Coast.
Writing and Editing Workshops for African language writers
NRP has conducted workshops with 80 ABET facilitators and writers from a variety of organisations. The purpose of these workshops is to build the capacity of African language writers and editors. Three stories were selected from each language each year and were published by NRP.
Members of minority language groups are given the skills necessary to edit each others’ writing and are given instruments which assist them in giving feedback to their peers.
